NATCHEZ — Legislation that reshapes Mississippi’s circuit and chancery court districts is awaiting the signature of Gov. Tate Reeves. District Attorney Tim Cotton said the Sixth Circuit District, of which Adams County is a part, remains intact but will add Pike County. At present, the district includes Adams, Wilkinson, Amite, and Franklin counties. The new district alignment will be phased in beginning in 2027. Cotton said the Sixth District’s population will increase from its present 50,000 to approximately 90,000 with the addition of Pike County. Claiborne and Jefferson counties will become a subdistrict of Hinds County. The district that currently contains Lincoln and Walthall counties will lose Pike County but pick up Copiah, Lawrence and Jeff Davis counties. Cotton said that due to the increase in population with the change in the Sixth District, additional staffing will be required. “Given the year that we have had, we do not have one spare hour to allocate to anything else right now without the inclusion of more staff,” he said. Details like staffing will be ironed out as time moves closer to the change. “We know a number of people in Pike County. We work closely already with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, which has an office in McComb and we look forward to continuing with that relationship. We have law enforcement ties over there and have worked in that district before,” Cotton said. “Change is something we don’t always welcome, but it is inevitable and in this case we do welcome it. We look forward to expansion and growing.”
